National Dongshih Vocational High School is devoted itself to teaching students how to do environmental protection and carbon reduction.  In order to achieve its educational goal, all students are not allowed to use disposable tableware.  Our school not only provides us chopsticks and bowls, but also designs a very useful way to generate electricity by natural sources in the school.  For example, we use water, wind power and solar energy to generate electricity for the usage of night school students.  Just at the corner of the Ecology & Energy Education Area in our school, you can open your eyes and realize how useful the natural power is.  We are going to welcome students from the Department of Drafting and the Department of Electronic Engineering to do their brief introduction about our Ecology & Energy Education Area.  Let’s take a look at their introduction.

A: Woo! How special the lamppost is!
B: Why are there a solar energy board and a fan on the top of the lamppost?

A: Oh, it is a device of Fan and Solar energy board power generation.
B: You mean a device of Fan and Solar energy board power generation.  How does it make energy?

A: It absorbs sunlight by solar energy board to generate electricity.
B: How about the fan?  What is it used for?

A: The fan blades whirl in the wind and then the wind power makes energy.
B: How many watts does it generate?

A: 200 Watts are generated by wind power and the solar energy board creates 80 watts.
B: Oh, I see.  They make 280 watts energy.

A: You are right.
B: Well, since the fan can make power by whirling, what is the speed when it generates energy?

A: 4m/sec to 21 m/sec.
B: How many lampposts do we have in this school?

A: There are 12 lampposts on the campus.
B: The fans and solar energy boards make electricity.  What is it used for?

A: It is used for lighting up this area for night school students.
B: What’s the else?

A: We are going to set up some Battery Charge Stations for people who live nearby to charge their batteries of their auto bikes, electric motorcycles or other vehicles for the elder.

A: Wow! This huge waterwheel looks so pretty.
B: Yes, it’s great.  It’s not only pretty but also important for Dongshih Vocational High School.  It’s a kind of Green Energy.

A: Green Energy?  Do you mean it is a device for generating electricity?
B: You bet!

A: So.  How does it generate electricity?
B: Well.  The waterwheel fetches water into a hidden well by twelve water pipes in a natural way without using power or consuming any energy.  According to Siphon Theory, water flows into a reservoir in the Ecology & Energy Education Area.

A: Do you mean the reservoirs?  I know where they are.  Let me show you.
There are two reservoirs in the Ecology & Energy Education Area.  When the first pool is filled with water, it will flow into the second one.  Finally, water will flow into the ecology pond.
B: Water will be filtered and pumped out of the ecology pond back to the tower and it can be reused to generate electricity again.

A: Wow.  It’s a kind of environmental protection.
B: And the weight of this waterwheel is about five hundred kilograms.

A: Five hundred kilograms?  It is almost equal to the weight of ten persons.
B: Yeah!  Although it is not big, the amount of electricity generating is about eight hundred watts.

A: It’s really good.  What does the eight hundred watts power do?
B: It can be used to light up the campus for night school students or pump water back to the tower to generate more electricity.

A: So it is really economical and beneficial.

A: Wow!  Where are we now?  It’s so beautiful.  What a special place!
B: This is our 3Q Creative Classroom and it belongs to the Dept. of Drafting in National Dongshih Vocational High School.

A: Then what is the meaning of the 3Q?
B: 3Q means the three perspectives of creative classroom.  The first Q means Intelligence Quotient.  Students’ Multi-intelligence and potential abilities of developments can be inspired practically.  The second Q stands for Emotional Quotient, which shows a person’s ability to cope with emotional situation.  Students can cultivate their teamwork abilities by “ Learning by Doing”.  The last Q represents Creativity Quotient.  Creativity makes our lives and learning more fun and meaningful.

A: Now I know there are so many benefits for students.  It also inspires students ideas.  What other features does the classroom have?
B: The Department of Drafting has cooperated with GIGO Company for several years.  Therefore, students could make good use of the blocks and parts offered by GIGO to do their new projects.  Those parts also meet the core value of Green Design called 3R.

A: I don’t quite understand what 3R is?
B: 3 R means Reduce, Recycle and Reuse.

A: Then what are the benefits of making projects?
B: There are a lot of benefits.  It makes students not only learn the ability of teamwork and team spirits, but also cultivate their abilities in communication, management and creativity.  Most importantly, students could strengthen their problem solving ability through making projects.

A: Wow!  That’s extremely great.  Students from Dongshih Vocational High School are lucky.
